Firlem lies in the most undesirable area of the world with very little good construction rock to quarry and very little farm land. This has been made worse by civil war and intentional destroying of the land in order to impede warring forces.
The nation has no real government since the emperor died. And even then, the emperor only kept power by killing anyone who challenged him and anyone they knew himself. The capital houses the facade of government for international politics. Every few months, a tournament is held to decide who will hold office. The surviving losers become the new government while the winner had the honor of killing them if they are not liked well enough, which they never are.
The Gnolls do not have especially large numbers of offspring when they reproduce nor do they reproduce much more frequently than humans, so population is often a concern when looking at Firlem. Due to the threat of sanctions they cannot afford to have against them, they do not have a sex trade, slaves, nor do they require all females to be pregnant at all times anymore. While technically done away with or outlawed, these practices are still commonly kept but with different names.
The main enemy of Firlem has always been Sharla. The Dwarves of Sharla were the final holdouts before the Wenic Toppled the Gnoll empire. The master craftsmen created structures seemingly overnight to retard the advance of the Gnolls. Traps, obstacles, mazes, these massive or intricate works of stone seemed to just appear and infuriated the Gnolls that they would not be met in open combat. Nyota Joto never fell. Since then, the two nations have had an openly secret war. They cannot march against each other because the Holy Army stands between them, blocking sea, land and air. Despite using the same methods, they claim the Dwarves using espionage and sabotage to be cowardly and an insult.
